PA Senate Votes to End Sprinkler Mandate (New Residential Construction)

Safety, Common Sense and Affordability appears to have prevailed in the PA Senates vote to support HB377. This replaces the a part of the Uniform Construction Code that would have mandated sprinkler systems in the construction of single family homes and 2-unit duplexes. The previous requirement ignored existing infrastructure limitations, disproportionately impacted rural areas and added an estimated 10% cost to new home construction - with little additional benefit to safety, but a significant impact on an already depressed new home contruction market.

Great response by the PA Legislature to correct an unrealistic regulatory mandate!

In follow-up to an article seeded earlier this year, the PA Legislature has taken responsible and common sense action to modify a section of the Uniform Construction Code. This is the kind of reasonable and realistic compromise that balances safety, affordability and a realistic assessment of the impact on would-be home builders and the housing market.

The UCC as originally adopted ignored the infrastructure issues, impact on rural home owners and the unsustainability of the proposed sprinkler mandate for single family homes and duplexes. I'm very pleased to see HB 377 and the Senate support to correct this over-reaching, and ill-conceived mandate.
